Theatre In Education Company (Sanskar Rang Toli) of National School of Drama was established on October 16, 1989, and is one of the important educational resource centers in the country.
TIE Company consists of a group of actor-teachers working with and performing for children. The major focus of TIE Company is to perform creative, curriculum based and participatory plays in schools specially designed and prepared for children of different age groups. The major thrust of the plays is to create an atmosphere to encourage children, to raise questions, make decisions and choices with an awareness of themselves within larger society.
TIE Company has done more than 800 performances of 26 plays in Delhi and other parts of the country. More than 5.5 lakh children, apart from college students, teachers, parents and theatre lovers, have witnessed these plays
Abdul Latif Khatana graduated from NSD in 1986 with specialisation in acting. In addition to devising, writing and directing several plays that have been nationally and internationally performed, he has conducted numerous workshops on acting. He is the founder of Adabi Sangat (Kashmir) and of the theatre group, Kirdar.
He was also a founder–actor–teacher of NSD’s Theatre-in-Education Company, of which he later became Chief. He is credited with conceptualising and organising the Company’s first national theatre festival for children called ‘Jashnebachpan’, followed by another national festival, ‘Bal Sangam’, of folk and traditional performing arts by children.
Mr Khatana has worked extensively with schools, institutions and NGOs to cultivate the need of theatre/drama for children at multiple levels. He has contributed to devising the theatre/drama syllabus for NCERT for classes 1 to 12.
