Othello

Believed to have been written in approximately 1603, Shakespeare's Othello, the Moor of Venice, is a tragedy based on the short story Moor of Venice by Cinthio. The work revolves around four central characters: Othello, his wife Desdemona, his lieutenant Cassio, and his trusted advisor Iago. Attesting to its enduring popularity, the play appeared in seven editions between 1622 and 1705. Because of its varied themes — racism, love, jealousy and betrayal — it remains popular and relevant across cultures and languages and social contexts. The play has also been the basis for numerous operatic, film and literary adaptations. This performance of the play was presented in the folk style of nautanki.

Direction: Raj Bisaria.

Main Istanbul Hoon

Main Istanbul Hoon is a weave of several books of Orhan Pamuk, the famous Turkish novelist. The first part of the play is a poetic interpretation of actual events that occurred in his life, while the second part deals with the love affair between a painter, Black, and his teacher/uncle’s young and beautiful daughter, Shekore. After being banished from Istanbul for kissing Shekore, Black returns after twelve years to find his love married and to see the city of his heart, Istanbul, changed beyond recognition. The most alarming change has been in the rise of Nusrat Huja, an extremist leader who poses a serious threat to all liberal activities and institutions, a development that has severe implications for Black and the entire artistic community.

The play was presented in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi,

Direction: Mohan Maharishi
