Shilpa Kanon

Shilpa Kanan is a socio-cultural organization based in Nangaon, a small town in Assam, that has been initiating a variety of activities along with its residents in recent years. During this time it has conducted theatre workshops, prepared productions and staged performances on a regular basis. Having noticed the natural affinity that children seem to have towards art, the group has formed a 'Children's Club' that trains them in painting, music, dance and acting. For those children who come from families that are economically weak, free training is provided. Up till now fifty children have already received training in various subjects in the 'Children's Club'. Shilpa Kanan's aim is not only to train children, but also to show them a path and perspective conducive to the building and development of a healthy society.

Items to be performed:

Bihu - The Bihu is the most important festival of Assam, and the dance by the same name is an integral part of Assamese culture. It is performed by Assamese boys and girls. During the performance of this dance the boys wear a dhoti-muga-kurta and the girls wear a muga-mekhala-chadar. The use of the 'phoolam gamosha', the traditional Assamese hand-woven towel is essential during this celebration. The traditional folk musical instruments used are the dhol pepa, gogona and taal.
